The young giants are growing

Sustainability

Reforestation is successful

With the project „Young giants for the next 100 years“, optimal media GmbH, in cooperation with the Nature Park Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide, has been offering customers the opportunity to support a regional nature protection project in the immediate vicinity of the production site for more than three years.
For a small surcharge on top of the order value for the production of books, printed matter, discs or other data carriers, customers receive a sustainable product and the corresponding contribution is invested in reforestation. In the long term, the planting will transform a monotonous pine forest on an area of 30 hectares into a climate-stable mixed deciduous forest. Three- to five-year-old deciduous trees such as beech, oak, sycamore maple, hornbeam, small-leaved lime and birch are used, some of which are obtained from particularly hardy and old trees, so-called „giants“, from the nature park and grown in the company’s own tree nursery.

The project has been well received by customers since the beginning – many book publishers, industrial companies and music labels regularly get involved, as does optimal media itself.
The first planting took place in March 2021, followed by others with representatives from optimal media and customers. So far, more than 2,500 „young giants“ have been planted, protected from browsing and cared for to ensure optimal growth. The growth rate from the past three years is exceptionally high at around 80 per cent.

Last weekend, employees of the company met with their family members and representatives of the Nature Park Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide to continue the reforestation of the climate-stable mixed deciduous forest. Around 900 more trees were planted thanks to the support of many customer projects.
