Project description

A look back at the first 25 years, presented in style

“Anonymous was a Woman” is an art prize established in 1996 by Susan Unterberg, which annually honours female artists aged 40 and over.

To mark its 25th anniversary, Hirmer Verlag published the book of the same name, “Anonymous was a Woman: The First 25 Years”, which we produced.

This non-fiction book presents, for the first time in its entirety, the achievements of the women who have contributed to fundamental changes in contemporary art. A selection of artworks, stories and biographical details of the more than 250 award winners thus provides an insight into the creative output of the past 25 years of this renowned US art prize.

In keeping with the title, the hardcover has a simple and elegant appearance. The milky, transparent dust jacket is printed with black foil, which allows the title to stand out clearly. The translucent word „Woman“ on the book cover contrasts with the rest of the title, which has a slightly greyish tone, and brings the female artists to the fore right from the start through a purely typographical design. The book cover itself is laminated on one side with a silver foil and further finished with a single-sided, transparent glossy PET film. A full-surface UV gloss vanish ensures a high-quality visual shine and protection. The title is embossed as a blind embossment on the U1. Black hot foil stamping further highlights the word „Woman“ on the U1 and on the spine. The names of the award winners on the U4 were printed using black foil ink.

Upon opening the hardcover, various artworks by the prize-winners appear as a mosaic on the front and back endpapers. The two printed front and back endpaper pages that follow, in Pantone Orange 1505, provide a striking contrast to the otherwise very minimalist design. An orange headband has been chosen to match. Orange highlights throughout the interior guide the reader through the book’s content.

This 392-page non-fiction book, with its clear structure and elegant design, pays tribute to the past 25 years of the art prize and its female laureates.
