Rolf Sachs
Distanz VerlagArt and design captured in style
As an artist and designer, Swiss-born Rolf Sachs is known, amongst other things, for his paintings, photographs, sculptures, furniture – particularly his passion for chairs – and architectural projects. He continues to create new works today in his studio in Rome, his adopted home. Familiar with the world of fame from an early age – his father was the famous Gunther Sachs, his stepmother Brigitte Bardot – he made a name for himself decades ago and is internationally renowned.
This monograph features selections from Sachs’ interdisciplinary art. It includes illustrations of his works from the 1990s to the present day. His works are organised not chronologically but thematically, with a focus on visual, conceptual and formal connections. The monograph is rounded off with a variety of essays by leading figures in the respective genres and an interview with the artist himself.
Sachs’ monograph is produced as a stiff brochure and contains a wealth of fine details. The transparent dust jacket, which features the artist’s large-format letters in black screen print, is striking yet understated. Beneath it lies the actual book, whose cover and spine are made of 3mm-thick, uncoated grey cardboard. The three elements have been bound together with a black spine strip, the spine is printed entirely in black. The cover board features a bright red screen-print in a special Pantone colour, displaying Rolf Sachs’s initials – the signature of his own work.
The endpaper of the booklet is glued to the covers in a shortened form. A look at the thread-stitched contents reveals further distinctive features: it comprises five different types of paper. In addition to the main text paper, the booklet contains three 16-page sheets of through-dyed paper in the intense colours of Azure Blue, Flamingo Red and Dark Yellow. Hidden away, yet forming an elegant curve towards the cover, a transparent page is glued in at three points. These, as well as the solid-coloured papers, are each printed in a single colour Black – whilst the main content paper is printed in four-colour process.
The three-sided smooth cut completes the stylish overall impression of the stiff brochure.
