Distanz VerlagUrban life under the microscope
Canadian artist Larissa Fassler has lived and worked in her adopted home of Berlin since 1999. Her works – which include sculptures, drawings and paintings in a cartographic style – have been shown in both solo and group exhibitions over the years. She has exhibited not only in Canada and Germany, but also in the United States, France, Brazil and Turkey.
In her works, the artist deals with urban life in a geopolitical, socio-economic and cultural context. She measures public spaces with her very own system, a lot of time and down to the smallest detail. In doing so, she documents, observes and scrutinises what she perceives, supplements it with research in archive and online materials and adds political and economic aspects.
Fassler’s works have been published as a monograph in this large-format stiff brochure. It is not only the three-sided smooth cut with its straight lines that emphasises the artist’s architectural-geographical works. The open thread stitching also reveals parallels to the content, particularly through the choice of red stitching thread, the tone of which can be found in many of the works.
Graphic elements and the artist’s name were screen-printed on the grey cardboard cover in a special colour in red, and the artist’s name was also blind embossed. Fine lines and typography in white were also added using screen printing. The special colour red of the book cover was also used for the full-surface printing on one side of the endpapers, creating a link to the content of the brochure.
