Distanz VerlagThe retrospective of a Berlin artist
In its 50th year of existence, the Berlinische Galerie is honouring an artist who has been a familiar face on the city’s art scene since the early 1980s: Käthe Kruse. From the very beginning, Kruse’s signature style has been cross-genre works and large-scale installations. In addition to painting and object art, her creative fields also include music and sound, video, photography and performances. She focuses on everyday objects, materially altering them and thereby giving them a completely new meaning. She even applies this approach to her own completed works, using these transformations to continually create new space for interpretations and connections. In her work, the artist thus makes it clear that her works are in a state of constant change. Not only do her own personal experiences flow into her work, but social issues and their critical examination also find their place.
The exhibition in spring 2025 comprised a good 50 works by the artist, which were presented not chronologically but in a thematic context – in keeping with the constant change in Kruse’s works.
In keeping with the theme of change and transformation, this art catalogue has a few special features in its production. The brochure’s five-fold grooved cover is made with an outwardly folded flap. This not only reveals what is hidden in its function, but also highlights contrasts in its texture. The outside of the cover is laminated on one side with a scratch-resistant gloss film, but the glossy finish on the flap is on the inside when folded down, creating a contrast between the glossy finish and the plain paper on the cover.
This concept is also reflected in the inside of the hollow spine brochure: two different types of paper were used here. For the first and last pages, the uncoated paper of the cover was chosen in a lighter grammage. The middle section of the brochure, which contains colour-intensive illustrations, was printed on coated paper.
