Colourful images in which birds are the main protagonists? Kristin Schnell, a freelance photographer living in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is known for this beyond the borders of Germany. In artificially created spaces, she captures the movements of birds against a wide variety of backdrops she has designed herself.
Her photographs all have one thing in common: they show colourful shapes and elements interacting with light and the lightness and delicacy of the birds. In her pictures, the photographer sees parallels between the life of birds in captivity and the protected spaces that humans willingly and voluntarily enter. Schnell says of her work that her intention is ‘to show the complex and impactful relationship between humans and animals.’
Her photographs have been published numerous times and were released last year by Kehrer Verlag in a wonderful hardcover edition.
In keeping with the theme, the large-format hardcover exudes a certain lightness. This is mainly due to the narrow box spine and the design of the cover. The cover is covered with a paper with a silky fabric look, which gives both the layout and the feel a fine, delicate touch, reminiscent of the filigree structure of feathers.
The dyed-through endpapers and the headband are Dark Green, forming a perfect link to the colourful, high-contrast photographs, which are shown to their best advantage on the 128 pages of bright paper.
It is particularly noteworthy that Kristin Schnell is supporting our regional nature conservation project ‘Young Giants for the Next 100 Years’ with her book.
